Ciro Velasco

Dr. Ciro Velasco earned a Ph.D. in Statistics from the Department of Statistics at Virginia Tech in 2012. His expertise spans both classical and Bayesian methodologies for data-driven model building. He is an experienced statistical consultant and collaborator.

After completing his Ph.D., he joined the Colegio de Postgraduados in Mexico as an Associate Professor, where he taught graduate-level statistics courses and assisted researchers in the biological and agricultural sciences with data analyses and model development.

Within collaborative research environments, Dr. Velasco has worked extensively on adapting and implementing models for time- and spatially correlated data. His work incorporates a wide range of approaches, including dynamic, linear, nonlinear, and nonparametric Bayesian models, as well as machine learning techniques such as random forests, supervised and unsupervised learning, and classification methods. He also has substantial experience in experimental design, and experimental data analysis.

In October 2025, Dr. Velasco joined the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business at New Mexico State University as an Assistant Professor. In this position, he teaches statistics courses, collaborates with students and researchers across the College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences (ACES), and continues to lead and expand the Agricultural Statistical Consulting Center.
